Long and beautiful hair? I want it now! We don’t feel like waiting for the effects and tend to go for widely-available solutions e.g. hair extensions. To me, it’s a very interesting alternative to hair growth treatments. Whenever you feel your natural hair isn’t able to grow longer, extensions may turn out to be an excellent solution.

In today’s post, you’re going to find out:

  • What are hair extensions?
  • What are the types of hair extensions?
  • How are hair extensions attached?

It’s hard to find a good, online article about hair extensions. I’ve read a lot and always felt there was still something to learn. I hope my post is going to prove to be more helpful. I gathered all must-know info on the hair extensions. I must warn you: it isn’t a post for professionals. I dedicate it to girls who go after some basic information about the extensions. If you want to learn more and still can’t decide if you should go for it – my article might help. 🙂

HAIR EXTENSIONS

The application of hair extensions is non-invasive and painless. It aims at boosting hair volume and length with fake hair strands.

Of course, the whole procedure depends on the method. Extensions come in different materials, sizes, etc. Obviously, natural hair extensions give the most natural-looking effects (manufacturers buy hair and it’s legal). The immediate effect of long hair is the biggest asset, that’s for sure. Your hairdo gets an instant definition, volume and appeal. With extensions, you can create some fancy hairstyles because hair’s longer and thicker. That’s why it’s a common choice of brides who know that their natural hair won’t give many possibilities.

Hair extension methods

We’re spoilt for choice. There are lots of ways. The better the salon, the higher likelihood of getting a wider offer of hair extensions and matching them to our needs.

  1. The sandwich hair extensions – tape on/off. Extensions are attached with a transparent tape to a natural hair section.
  2. Keratin hair extensions – this method involves heat which binds extensions to the natural strands. Extensions have keratin scales at the end. The other version involves applying warm keratin to strands that are joined with a gun.
  3. Laser hair extensions – the laser method involves joining natural hair and extensions precisely with a laser beam. This method is very gentle and you feel almost nothing, which is its great benefit.
  4. Microring hair extensions – this method is extremely popular because every extension is attached to a strand of natural hair with a special ring without the need for the glue. The easy loop version lets you apply extensions quickly and skillfully.
  5. Hair extension rings – the method is similar to no 4. Extensions are applied with metal or silicone rings (using pliers) that must go with the natural hair color.
  6. Japanese hair extensions – in other words, hair extension braids. Simply put, synthetic extensions are braided into natural hair with braids (that are around one-cm long and a few mm wide).
  7. Clip on/off hair extensions – in other words, with the tape clips. The fastest method because tape extensions are attached between natural hair with tiny clips.
  8. Ultrasonic hair extensions – this method uses the cold fusion. Ultrasonic waves solidly attach keratin bonds to natural hair, replacing the hot fusion which is more harmful to hair.

You surely must know that each method has its pros and cons.

Depending on the effect we desire – long-lasting or one-off hair improvement – we can choose between different methods. Once, I used the most popular and I guess the cheapest technique – clip-on extensions. The clips are applied quickly so it’s perfect to use before a wedding or party. On the other hand, if you want a super natural look (almost invisible extension tips) and long-term effect, pick ultrasonic or laser extensions.
